Historical Interpretation

Dorothy Parker: Death and Taxes

Rene Goodwin as Dorothy ParkerRene Goodwin presents a first person dramatic interpretation of prominent American writer Dorothy Parker.

In this program, she gives you a look at the life of the woman born Dorothy Rothschild who, although considered the ultimate New Yorker, was actually born in West End, New Jersey, on August 22, 1893. She became Dorothy Parker when she married Edwin Pond Parker II on June 30, 1917. For the girl born in New Jersey, but raised in New York City, two major life changes occurred about the same time. She became a married woman, and began a long, unique career as one of the most prominent women writers of the 20th Century.

She became New York City’s first woman drama critic, wrote screenplays, including “A Star Is Born”, and was an accomplished poet. This scotch drinking, acerbic wit, was perhaps best known for her short stories and her reputation as one of the original members of the Algonquin’s Round Table.
